EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This compendium presents 277 documents from the Department of Justice’s Epstein FOIA release that directly concern the relationship between Bill Gates and Jeffrey Epstein. Together, they dismantle every public claim Gates has made about the nature, duration, and purpose of that relationship.
THE PUBLIC NARRATIVE
Bill Gates has offered three rounds of public explanation for his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. Each has been carefully calibrated to minimize the connection.
August 2019 (Gates spokesperson, after Epstein arrest):
“Bill Gates regrets ever meeting with Epstein and recognizes it was an error in judgment to do so... Gates made no financial contributions to Epstein.”

The documents tell a completely different story. What follows is what 277 DOJ files actually contain.
WHAT THE DOCUMENTS ACTUALLY SHOW
1. Not “Several Meetings” -- A Deep, Multi-Year Operational Relationship
The documents reveal not a handful of awkward encounters but an extensive, multi-year operational partnership spanning 2009 to at least 2019. Gates visited Epstein’s 71st Street townhouse repeatedly, met him at the Four Seasons, the Core Club, and in Paris. In February-March 2013, Gates spent three consecutive days with Epstein: meetings at the Four Seasons at 2pm and again at 10:15pm, another meeting the next day at 2pm, then a planned flight to Palm Beach on Epstein’s plane -- with a lunch with Woody Allen squeezed in between.
"JE also says he might see Gates again on Thurs at 2:00 and then possibly on Friday fly to PB with Gates as his passenger... which makes me wonder what happened to the lunch at 1pm on Friday march 1 with Gates and Woody Allen!"
Epstein’s staff treated Gates visits as major events. Schedules were circulated to the full team including the pilot, Lawrence Visoski. Regular Skype check-ins between Gates, Epstein, and Larry Cohen (Gates’ scheduler at bgC3) were scheduled like clockwork: “can you skype this week?” “9:30am PST on the 27th work?”

2. Not Philanthropy -- Financial Deal-Making With a Sex Offender
The documents show Epstein actively structuring multi-million dollar investment vehicles for Gates. In October 2013, Epstein emailed Gates, Boris Nikolic, and Larry Cohen with specific fund terms:
"Bill uses a 10-15 million dollar advance to buy his interest in the fund. Boris gets all the downside and fifty percent of the upside. Both are in the same position re the last deal, and bill has a free ride on 50 percent of the interests ups."
A separate email laid out a secret financial agreement with explicit instructions to hide the terms: “We are agreed upside 100% FM, 50% RG, 2.5 million advance jan 1 finish... no reference to last day in public email.” Epstein warned against “memorizing preliminary ideas in writing.”
Beyond investment funds, Epstein drove the creation of a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) he pitched to Gates as “cloud computing for the giving world.” Gates responded enthusiastically: “It is clearer to me now than before and it could be a great thing.” He planned a trip to New York specifically to meet with Epstein about it. The DAF project drew in Gates Foundation General Counsel Connie Collingsworth, who wrote detailed legal memos to Epstein, described the project as “our work,” and coordinated with Paul Weiss (at Epstein’s direction via Brad Karp) and Morgan Lewis (the Foundation’s own counsel). CFO Dick Henriques called Epstein directly about a “donor vehicle.” Epstein told Gates and Cohen: “spoke to dick enriques, i suggested that i sit with him connie and tax person.”
3. The Boris Nikolic Pipeline -- Epstein’s Man Inside Gates
Boris Nikolic, Gates’ science advisor and a named backup executor of Epstein’s will, served as Epstein’s primary conduit into Gates’ world. Epstein introduced Boris to billionaires as “Bill Gates right hand, he is a good friend.” The documents show Boris forwarding Gates’ confidential emails to Epstein -- including a $10 million Foundation Medicine investment email and Gates’ internal company-wide announcement about Boris’s departure from the Foundation.
A CONFIDENTIAL Letter of Understanding for a “New Investment Entity wholly owned by William H. Gates III” was found in Epstein’s files. This corporate formation document -- between bgC3 and Boris Nikolic -- had no business being in the possession of a convicted sex offender.
When Boris left the Gates Foundation, Epstein, Gates, and Larry Cohen co-drafted the resignation announcement. Larry Cohen confirmed: “Bill edited the email and it’s a better reflection of his voice.” Epstein suggested changing “I hereby resign” to “I have decided to leave.” A convicted sex offender was editing Gates Foundation HR communications.
Epstein also probed Gates’ private financial structure through Boris. When Epstein asked “who owns the larsen fund?” Boris answered without hesitation: “Bill personally. Cascade Investments LLC, a private investment and holding company... controlled by Bill Gates... Kirkland, Washington.”

4. The $500K Payment and Mutual Threats
Gates paid Boris Nikolic $500,000 as a “gift” -- structured to avoid income reporting. When Boris wanted more, Gates issued threats through Epstein:
"If Boris decides he has changed his mind about what was agreed when you visited our offices that is too bad. When someone asks for more there is no end to it... Boris can make whatever he wants public at that point and I will explain to the right people what was done to me and by whom."
Epstein and Gates argued about the tax treatment of this payment. Gates pushed back with a subtle counter-threat about Epstein’s own tax arrangement:
"I don't understand why you keep bringing this up. I paid the gift tax on my 2009 return. I am the most careful taxpayer in the country and I have paid over $7B in taxes... Some tax things like your Virgin Islands stuff are not that well known. The whole discussion has broken down... The rebuilding of trust failed." -- Bill Gates to Jeffrey Epstein, EFTA01756693, Aug 2013
Meanwhile, Epstein held his own leverage. A draft email found in his files -- sent from Epstein to Epstein on July 18, 2013, subject line “bill” -- reads like a fake Gates Foundation resignation letter:
"From helping Bill to get drugs, in order to deal with consequences of sex with russian girls, to facilictating his illicit trysts, with married women, to being asked to provide adderall fro bridge tournamnts." -- Jeffrey Epstein (draft to self), EFTA01966988, July 2013
Whether this is genuine leverage material or fabricated blackmail fodder, its existence in Epstein’s files alongside hundreds of real Gates emails, financial documents, and confidential corporate papers speaks for itself.
5. Melinda Gates Was There
On September 20, 2013, Bill and Melinda Gates attended a dinner at Epstein’s townhouse. The full schedule confirms it:
"7:30 BILL & Melinda GATES to arrive the house. 8:00pm DINNER: Bill, Melinda, Terje, Jagbland, JE. Larry & Lisa Summers are invited. Eva & Celina will stop by but not be seated for dinner."
The guest list is devastating. Thorbjorn Jagland (former Norwegian PM) has since been CHARGED with corruption. Terje Rod-Larsen (Norwegian diplomat) was deeply entangled with Epstein. Larry and Lisa Summers were invited. Ehud Barak (former Israeli PM) met Boris Nikolic at Epstein’s house earlier that same day. And “Eva & Celina” -- unnamed young women -- would “stop by” a convicted sex offender’s dinner party. Melinda Gates saw all of this firsthand. The divorce followed.
6. The Kathryn Ruemmler Operation
One of the most remarkable threads in the documents is Epstein’s placement of Kathryn Ruemmler -- former White House Counsel under President Obama -- as Gates’ personal attorney. Epstein pitched her to Gates and Larry Cohen in June 2014:
"she is smart, melinda will like her, well respected by IRS, SEC, justice."
Epstein scheduled Ruemmler to meet Gates on September 4, 2014. She met him at the Four Seasons on September 8. Epstein offered her again when Gates visited Seattle in December. She eventually became Gates’ personal attorney. What the documents also show: Ruemmler was simultaneously in a 9-year personal relationship with Epstein (2010-2019). She debriefed Epstein on her meetings with Gates and his leadership, including Brad Smith. By 2017, she was “placed with Bill and Melinda.” A convicted sex offender installed his girlfriend as the personal attorney to the world’s richest man.

7. Gates Foundation Infiltration -- Six Layers Deep
Epstein’s reach into the Gates Foundation was not casual. At least six senior Foundation staff had direct, documented contact with Epstein:
- Connie Collingsworth (General Counsel)
Wrote legal memos to Epstein about the DAF, described it as "our work," consulted Paul Weiss at Epstein's suggestion, reported deliverables and timelines directly to Epstein.
- Dick Henriques (CFO)
Called Epstein directly about a "donor vehicle." Attended Jan 2012 formal meeting with Epstein. Referenced as senior staff in Epstein's emails to Jes Staley.
- Melanie Walker (Special Initiatives, $315M grants)
20-year friendship with Epstein. Reconnected 2 months after his release from prison. Called Epstein "superfly." Tried to bring Epstein's microcurrency idea into the Foundation. Introduced Epstein to former Gates Foundation CFO Alex Friedman. Forwarded Microsoft insider information to Epstein.
- Julie Sunderland (Director, Program Related Investment)
Boris told her to meet Epstein because "Bill suggested" it. Attended the Jan 2012 formal meeting alongside the CFO, GC, and Donor Engagement.
- Gabrielle Fitzgerald (Deputy Director, Global Health)
Organized a 6-person Foundation meeting with Epstein in January 2012. Boris mocked her due diligence on Epstein.
- Alex Friedman (Former CFO)
Introduced to Epstein by Melanie Walker in September 2010. Described as finding Gates Foundation leadership "constraining and uncreative."
Epstein also brokered an introduction between Gates Foundation program manager Jenna Brereton and the Ivory Coast president’s niece -- inserting himself into the Foundation’s field operations in West Africa.
8. Epstein as Gatekeeper to the World’s Richest Man
Epstein did not merely socialize with Gates. He controlled access to him. When Peter Mandelson (UK politician, now under criminal investigation) asked Epstein for a meeting with Gates, Epstein forwarded the request to Boris with a blunt instruction: “i only want it you me and bill, how would you like me to respond.” Epstein decided who got through.
The CEO of JPMorgan Chase, Jes Staley, could not get a one-on-one meeting with Gates at Davos without going through Epstein: “Jes Staley’s office is asking if you were able to assist in helping with the request of a 1 on 1 meeting with Bill Gates next week while Jes is at Davos.”
Epstein organized a December 2014 dinner bringing together Gates, Josh Harris (Apollo Global Management co-founder), and Ron Baron (Baron Capital Group founder). He brokered introductions to George Church (Harvard genetics pioneer), offered Bill Burns as a potential meeting, and continuously supplied Gates with a pipeline of high-value contacts. Larry Summers “pretzeled” his schedule to attend an Epstein gathering with Gates. In May 2011, Gates, Summers, and Jes Staley dined with Epstein at 9pm, then all went to the Vogue After Party at the Boom Boom Room at 11pm.

9. Sovereign-Level Access Shared With a Sex Offender
In June 2014, Gates told Epstein he was heading to Saudi Arabia, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi to meet the King, Crown Prince, and Deputy Crown Prince. Foundation work on Egypt, Yemen, and Pakistan polio. Epstein’s response was a list of six demands: a Muqrin connection, Paris time with Jagland, contributions to “the charities I help,” Dubai contacts, hiring Kathryn Ruemmler for the DAF, and a dirty joke about a proctologist. Gates was sharing sovereign-level diplomatic itineraries with a convicted sex offender who responded with demands and vulgarity.
10. Press Management and the Michael Wolff Article
Epstein collaboratively drafted a Gates-Epstein article with journalist Michael Wolff (author of “Fire and Fury”). Epstein offered Wolff “bill gates. nathan myhrvold” as names for events he had attended. Separately, a New York Times reporter appears to have traded favorable coverage for access to Gates through Epstein. The documents reveal an active effort to manage the public narrative around the relationship.

2009 12 documents. Earliest confirmed contact. Boris Nikolic already established as conduit between Gates and Epstein.
2010 45 documents. Epstein introduces Boris as “Bill Gates right hand” to billionaire Tom Pritzker. Post-conviction relationship fully operational. Melanie Walker reconnects with Epstein 2 months after prison release. Gates visits Epstein’s London residence.
2011 221 documents -- the most active year by volume. Dinner with Gates, Larry Summers, and Jes Staley, followed by Vogue After Party at Boom Boom Room. Gates dines with Boris and Peter Mandelson at Epstein’s townhouse (Mandelson sleeping over). Epstein gatekeeps Mandelson’s access to Gates. Summers “pretzeling” his schedule for Gates event.
