I guess it is more complicated than he was simply "elected." Hitler certainly had more legitimate claim to power than Winston Churchill. And FDR promised to keep America out of war, so his "election" was based on a promise (or lie) he never intended to keep. In my opinion they were both illegitimate. Like Biden today.
